Sports Pearls, 31 May 2025: FIH Hockey Junior World Cups are the premier hockey tournaments organized by the International Hockey Federation. This year i.e. 2025, men’s and women’s Junior World Cup hockey competitions are to be held, of which the responsibility of hosting the men’s tournament has been entrusted to India while the women’s tournament has been entrusted to Chile. Both the countries are hosting these World Cup tournaments for the fourth time.
FIH Hockey Men’s Junior World Cup: For the first time, 24 teams will participate
The men’s tournament has been scheduled to be held in Chennai, the capital of India’s southernmost state of Tamil Nadu, as well as Madurai. A total of 24 hockey teams will participate in this tournament, which will be held from 28 November to 10 December 2025. This is the first time in the history of the Junior Hockey World Cup, which started in 1979, that 24 teams are participating. Earlier, 20 teams participated in the 9th World Cup held in Malaysia-Singapore in 2009. Most of the times, this tournament was played by 16 teams.
With the conclusion of the Africa Hockey Cup on the African continent, the qualification process for the FIH Hockey Men’s Junior World Cup 2025 has now been completed. India has qualified for the competition as the host. Belgium, England, France, Germany, Ireland, Netherlands, Spain, Austria and Switzerland have qualified from Europe. Argentina, Canada and Chile have qualified from the American continent, Pakistan, China, Bangladesh, Japan, Malaysia and Thailand from Asia, Australia and New Zealand from Oceania, while South Africa, Namibia and Egypt have qualified from the African continent.
24 teams divided into 6 pools of 4-4, 3 pools will have matches in Chennai and 3 pools in Madurai
All 24 teams have been divided into 6 pools (groups) of 4 each. Currently, the names of 1-1 teams in each pool have been announced while the rest of the teams are yet to be announced. The host Indian team has been included in Pool B. Germany Pool A, Argentina Pool C, Spain Pool D, Netherlands Pool E and France have been placed in Pool F. Out of the 6, the matches of Pools A, D and E will be held in Madurai while the matches of Pools B, C and F will be held in Chennai. From November 28 to December 2, each team will play 1-1 matches with the other teams in their respective pools. After the conclusion of the pool round matches, 16 teams will advance to the next “crossover round” based on the performance of each team in their pools. Total 8 matches will be played in this round and winners 8 teams will advance to the quarter-final round. Quarter-final round winners will enter in to semifinal.
Germany’s men became champions 7 times, India and Argentina 2 times each
Germany’s men have won a record 7 Junior Hockey World Cup tournaments since 1979. The German team won the Junior Hockey World Cup title in 1982, 1985, 1989, 1993, 2009, 2013 and 2023. India won the title twice in 2001 and 2016, Argentina twice in 2005 and 2021, while Pakistan and Australia have won once each in 1979 and 1997.
FIH Hockey women junior world cup Will be played in Santiago, Chile
FIH Hockey women junior world cup Women’s Junior World Cup 2025 will be played in Santiago, Chile from December 1 to December 13. Teams from 24 countries will also participate in this. Chile has qualified as the host of the competition. The remaining teams are Argentina, Uruguay, United States and Canada from the Americas, Austria, Belgium, England, Germany, Netherlands, Spain, Ireland, Wales and Scotland from Europe, India, China, Japan, Korea and Malaysia from Asia, Australia and New Zealand from the Oceania region, while South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe have qualified from the African continent. With this, the qualification process for the FIH Hockey Women’s Junior World Cup Chile 2025 has now been completed.
The Dutch women have won the Junior Hockey World Cup title a record 5 times. Argentina and Korea have won 2 times each, while Germany have won 1 time.
